Water quality impacts of fuel reduction burning
The Department of Forest and Ecosystem Science ( University of Melbourne ) and the Cooperative Research Centre for Forestry are seeking a suitably qualified and motivated PhD candidate to undertake research on the water quality impacts of fuel reduction burning.
The CRC for Forestry is a national, seven-year initiative to apply next generation technologies to management challenges in forest ecosystems. The prospective student will work together with a multi-disciplinary research team within Program 4 of the CRC. This program will conduct research into the impact of forestry activities on water yield and quality . The student will be supervised by staff from the University of Melbourne .
The student will have some flexibility in defining the research area, within the milestones of CRC Program 4. Possible areas include the quantification of the net impact of control burning on exports of sediment and nutrients, identification of the near stream-processes driving changes in water quality and evaluation of the effectiveness and practicality of riparian protection measures. Prospective students will have a background in physical and natural sciences, natural resource management or related discipline, with demonstrated ability in statistical analysis of hydrologic, soil science or related data sets .

Hydrologic impacts of forest management, including harvesting and thinning
The Department of Forest and Ecosystem Science ( University of Melbourne ) and the Cooperative Research Centre for Forestry are seeking a suitably qualified and motivated PhD candidate to undertake research into the hydrologic impacts of forest management, including harvesting and thinning.
The CRC for Forestry is a national, seven-year initiative to apply next generation technologies to management challenges in forest ecosystems. The prospective student will work together with a multi-disciplinary research team within Program 4 of the CRC. This program will conduct research into the impact of forestry activities on water yield and quality . The student will be supervised by staff from the University of Melbourne .

Possible research areas include the impact of thinning regimes on water yield, including frequency and magnitude of thinning and the eco-hydrologic interplay of vegetation structure and water use, and mixed species/age water use relationship and response to fire and logging disturbance. Prospective students will have a background in physical and natural sciences, natural resource management or related discipline, with demonstrated ability in statistical analysis of hydrologic, soil science or related data sets .
