Professor Peter Vinden (M.Sc. (Eng). DIC, PhD) is Foundation Chair of Forest Industries within the Department of Forest and Ecosystem Science. He was elected Fellow of the Institute of Wood Science in 1992 and is currently chair of the Australian Division. In 1997 he was elected Fellow of Russian Academy of Natural Science recognising his work on vapour phase treatment of wood. In 2004 he was identified by the Bulletin Magazine as one of the top 10 Australian Scientists. Professor Vinden was Head of Campus School of Forestry Creswick (1995 - 2002) and CEO of the CRC Wood Innovations from its inception in 2000 to 2005. He is currently Director of Research for the CRC. Much of Professor Vinden research and that of his research group has focussed on the development of new processing technologies to improve the environmental performance of forest industries. This includes the area of microwave processing, wood preservation and wood drying, the development of processes to reduce wood waste, and the use of wood waste and biomass for value added products, including the development of novel materials that can be used to remove heavy metals and proteins from the environment, in particular the industrial environment. He is author / co-author of 180 refereed conference and journal papers and 12 patents. Professor Vinden has an intimate knowledge of the forest industries, the use of wood as a raw material, its environmental properties, the characteristics of wood wastes and their potential for recycling and use for value added products.
